Attendance and Booth Sales Up at Baltimore Expo

The Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo experienced a 5% increase in attendance and a 12% jump in the number of dealer booths, Whitman announced today.

The Expo, which ran from November 17-20, included 1,200 exhibitors and was characterized by strong activity on both the retail and wholesale levels, according to an informal survey of key dealers. Other highlights:

  • The Official Auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries, which realized more than $15 million.
  • The Liberty Seated Collectors' Club exhibit
  • The launch of Certified Assets Management International—a joint venture designed to help investors with acquisition and management of numismatic and precious metals. Led by a Wall Street money manager and a veteran professional rare coin dealer, CAMI has been granted approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission and was announced as a part of the Baltimore Expo.
  • “The Olympic Games: The First 1,166 Years,” an hour-long presentation by Anthony F. Milavic took the audience back to the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Mr. Milavic, a retired U.S. Marine Major traced the Games to their roots in Greek culture, and illuminated fascinating details about the Games.
  • The public unveiling of the new Whitman.com, the online destination for numismatic and Expo news, as well as books and supplies.

Whitman General Manager David Crenshaw declared the Winter Expo a success.

“Whether you measure it by the number of dealers, the attendance from the public, or the amount of fresh coins and business transacted, clearly this was another success for Baltimore and the collecting community,” Mr. Crenshaw said.

“We’re pleased and gratified by the reception we continue to receive in Charm City. In fact, we sometimes wonder if it shouldn’t be called ‘Coin City,’” he said.

Mr. Crenshaw said plans are already under way for the Spring Expo, to be held March 22-25 at the Baltimore Convention Center. They include a special tie-in with the Bicentennial Celebration of the War of 1812, in which Baltimore figured so prominently. Stay tuned for further details.
