The Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo is celebrating its 37th year as one of the nation's premier coin and currency shows. The show's free admission and free meetings and educational forums attract thousands of visitors every year.
"Coins and currency are hot collectibles," said general manager David Crenshaw. "Gold and silver are on the rise. This always brings a lot of fresh interest in rare coins. Plus the U.S. Mint has introduced some exciting coins, like a new Abraham Lincoln cent, territorial quarters, and Louis Braille silver dollars. More people are collecting rare paper money, too. These hobbies relate to United States history, fine arts, presidential politics, and all aspects of American culture."
The November 12-15 Baltimore Expo kicks off the show with a major Bowers & Merena auction of rare coins and paper money. The auction will feature the collection of U.S. and world coins assembled by one of America's most renowned numismatic collectors, Dr. Alfred R. Globus. Highlights include an 1830 Capped Bust half eagle and a German Saxony-Coburg-Gotha 20-mark coin, 1895-A.
As always, the show's free meetings and educational forums are a huge draw. The Baltimore Coin Club, the Maryland State Numismatic Association, the federally chartered American Numismatic Association, and other collector groups give the public plenty of venues to ask questions, bring in coins, and seek free appraisals.
"Hundreds of dealers travel to the show from around the country," said Crenshaw. "They are happy to look at coins and paper money and offer value appraisals. If you have an old coin or two tucked away in a box, come in and ask questions in a safe and friendly environment. Who knows, you might have a valuable rarity without even knowing it!"
Coins and currency are not just for grownups. Young collectors are welcome at the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention. "Kid's Korner" activities start at 10 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Every youngster 6 to 12 years old who attends will go home with free coins and prizes.
