As the Chief Engraver of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Christopher Madden has created amazing art that you carry with you every day.
For starters, there's the back of the $10 bill, which he painstakingly engraved.
Mr. Madden didn't gain his talents overnight. In fact, his course of study for learning his craft lasted longer than a surgeon's; the apprenticeship program took a full decade of careful study and slow accretion of skills after he had earned his Masters degree. Yet, as talented as he is in discharging his primary responsibility, he may be even more adept at representing the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to the public, as he's done this weekend at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo.
At the BEP Exhibit, in a special corner of the Bourse, Mr. Madden and his colleagues demonstrate engraving, printing on 19th century spider presses and reconstructing currency that has literally been shredded, burned or water-logged.
"I enjoy being a voice for the creation of our nation's currency," Mr. Madden says.
