Friday evening opened with numismatic fanfare as Stack's Session 4 of The Philadelphia Americana Sale begin to cross the block. On hand were collectors, dealers and investors from all across North America. There were also eager bidders on the Internet plus so many phone bidders that extra telephones had to be brought into the auction room. Who would have imagined that early American medals would be one of the hottest tickets of the year?
History was made with Lot 6118, the historic Large size Jefferson Indian Peace Medal (silver, shown at right) that sold to a floor bidder for $345,000. The lot hammered with a roar of spontaneous applause from those attending the auction. This was a world record for any Indian Peace Medal!
Other highlights included: Lot 6106, The Extraordinary Calvert Indian Peach Medal that sold for over $126,000. Lot 6107, The Famed 1757 Quaker Treaty of Easton Medal that sold for over $100,000. Lot 6108, The 1761 Montreal Medal by D.C. Fueter that sold for $115,000 Lot 6119, the Extremely Rare 1801 Jefferson Peace Medal, medium size, for over $160,000. Many more lots that exceed $100k including the buyer's fee.
