John Mercanti

John M. Mercanti is one of the most prolific artists in U.S. Mint history. He served as the Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver and produced more coin and medal designs than any other employee, including the iconic Heraldic Eagle reverse used on American Silver Eagles from 1986 to 2021. A Philadelphia native, Mercanti trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia College of Art, and the Fleisher Art Memorial. He joined the U.S. Mint in 1974 as a sculptor-engraver under Frank Gasparro and was appointed Chief Engraver in 2006, a role he held until retiring in 2010. His designs include numerous circulating coins, commemoratives, Congressional Gold Medals, and bullion issues honoring major figures and events in American history.
