Q. David Bowers
Foreword by Kenneth Bressett
Only Q. David Bowers, the “Dean of American Numismatics,” could have produced a book as comprehensive and authoritative as the first edition of the Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins. Now, in the second edition, Bowers and his panel of specialists in the field add newly discovered coins, bring fresh historical research to the text, and update hundreds of listings with new information, rarity figures, pricing, and images. This fully revised and updated edition remains the definitive reference on colonial and early American coins, tokens, and related issues. (Hardcover, 352 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches)

Like the 1st edition, this book is a thorough introduction to early American coinage for collectors at any level, and useful to specialist collectors of this series. I would have appreciated more discussion of trends in coin prices between the 1st edition and this edition. Where practical, I would add coin weights (weight peaks or weight ranges); this helps to flag electrotypes and other fakes. Weights in grains is old fashioned; also give weights in grams.

As usual David Bowers has produced an important resource. It is excellent in every detail. My one suggestion would be review the placement of values tables in those few sections where there are wide distances between indicated values, it creates extra searching.

5 Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins

I keep this reference withing arm's length at home. The research is up to date and this one volume is a compilation of information that previously would cost hundreds of dollars in specialized book purchases. Whether you collect colonial coins or are interested in the numismatic history of the period, this book would find a welcome spot in any numismatic library.

A solid update to a very useful and practical book. My first edition was well-worn, and I am certain that this one will get lots and lots of use as well.
