In 1950 she joined La Sonora Matancera, Cuba’s leading Afro-Cuban orchestra, as their first black frontwoman. She joined the Fania All-Stars in 1973 and the years that followed cemented her position as the Queen of Salsa. She recorded 23 gold albums, won seven Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, was awarded the National Medal of Arts, was inducted into Billboard’s Latin Music Hall of Fame and the International Latin Music Hall of Fame, and posthumously received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys in 2016.
