Uncirculated complete P, D, & S quarter set of the pioneering American Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, which includes the scarce "S" mint quarter. The coins will arrive in a 3x5 plastic case. This set includes three coins.
Mary Edwards Walker was a Civil War era surgeon, women’s rights and dress reform advocate. She graduated in 1855 with honors from Syracuse Medical College, the only woman in her class. When the Civil War erupted in 1861, Walker tried to join the Union Army as a surgeon but was rejected, then served as a civilian nurse, and later was made a “Contract Acting Assistant Surgeon (civilian),” the first woman in U.S. history to hold such a position. She was captured by the Confederates and charged with spying for the Union, spending four months in a Virginia prison. President Johnson awarded her the Medal of Honor for her bravery and service, one of only eight civilians, and the only woman, to receive the prestigious decoration. After the war, she was an accomplished writer and lecturer and lobbied tirelessly for women’s dress reform, voting rights, and the right to be treated as an equal in marriage and other areas of life. She died in 1919, only a year before the 19th Amendment guaranteed women the right to vote.
