Patsy Matsu Mink was an American attorney and politician from the state of Hawaii. In 1962, she made history by becoming the first woman of color elected to the Congress where she played a role in much of the civil-rights legislation of the 1960s. One of her most significant contributions came in 1972, when she co-authored and sponsored the groundbreaking Title IX legislation. Part of the Education Amendments Act, Title IX aimed to eliminate gender-based discrimination in educational institutions, particularly in academics and sports. She served in the United States House of Representatives for 24 years as a member of the Democratic Party, initially from 1965 to 1977, and again from 1990 until her death in 2002.
